I paint colorful outdoor landscapes. Whether working in the studio or en plein air my medium of choice is oil. Before painting, preparatory sketches or drawings in graphite, charcoal, ballpoint pen, or watercolor ease the way into the oil paintings which are executed using a palette knife and/or brushes. My art conveys a sense of energy through texture that stems from a wide variety of mark making.

"Kalighat Boat Bridge" - 8 " x 8" Oil on Canvas; 2007 Solo Exhibition - AVAILABLE. $1000. Contact Sharon Weiss Gallery. I never wanted to go to Kolkata (the old Calcutta) after seeing a photo of a crowded dusty street in a National G Magazine years ago. But, we had one very interesting 24 hours there before flying to Bhutan. We put it to good use. Up before sunrise, we had chai on our hotel balcony and watched the neighborhood wake up. Across the street from our hotel was a large vegetable market and we spent some time there watching the men hard at work unloading trucks of huge sacks of cauliflower. Then we walked to a local outdoor market for breakfast. I handed half of mine to a small boy who was hungry. We crossed the river by ferry and did a bit of a walking tour before taking a taxi to the Kali Temple. What an experience that was! When we left the temple we walked to the Kalighat, where this boat bridge crosses the shallow dark grey river, a tributary of the Ganges. It is sacred, even if it is filthy. We set up our easels and went to work. The color of the magnificent saris against the squallor of India in a big crowded city - fascinating! Copyright 2007.
