I paint colorful outdoor landscapes. Whether working in the studio or en plein air my medium of choice is oil. Before painting, preparatory sketches or drawings in graphite, charcoal, ballpoint pen, or watercolor ease the way into the oil paintings which are executed using a palette knife and/or brushes. My art conveys a sense of energy through texture that stems from a wide variety of mark making.
Low Tide, Arabian Sea
BACK
"Low Tide, Arabian Sea" - 24 x 30", Oil on Panel - PRIVATE COLLECTION. On our last afternoon in India, and after an interesting and pleasurable 45 minute boat ride we arrived at Elephanta Island, off the coast of Mumbai's busy harbor. Not ashore for long, we came across this scene, and I was rivited by what I saw. Immediately I knew that someday I would paint it. Growing up on the water in Maryland, fishing and crabbing all summer long, we had a rowboat; but, my sisters and I often romantically imagined ourselves sailors on a ship, and in my mind that ship was very much like these. That afternoon in India, looking at the these boats ladened with the character of age, decay and repair, I imagined the work and the life of these men. I wondered how often they beached their boats at low tide, jumped into the water and worked at cleaning from the hulls of their large fishing vessels the moss and debris that collected over time. I sat drawing, and internalizing the image for future reference. Enjoy! Copyright 2007.
