I paint colorful outdoor landscapes. Whether working in the studio or en plein air my medium of choice is oil. Before painting, preparatory sketches or drawings in graphite, charcoal, ballpoint pen, or watercolor ease the way into the oil paintings which are executed using a palette knife and/or brushes. My art conveys a sense of energy through texture that stems from a wide variety of mark making.

"Holyman Beside the River" - 10" x 8", Oil on Canvas. 2007 Solo Exhibition. PRIVATE COLLECTION. This Holyman lives in Orchha, India. He is dressed in fine linen fabrics and wears the mark of Vishnu on his forehead. We found him relaxing among some large rocks near the river. Through an interpreter we asked if he would pose for us to paint him. We paid him the equivalent of about $4.50 to pose for two hours. He was around 74 years old, and we don't really think he understood what it meant to sit for a painting. Posing for photos he was used to - a quick pose or two and you are done. He sat patiently for me, cross-legged on a large rock, but after about 15 minutes I could see he was weary. I tried to tell him he could get up and come back, but he didn't understand this. After about 55 minutes, I said enough, and released him from his misery. He was happy with the painting. I shared my orange, "bikkies" and cashews with him. He went home with a pocket full of money, and I walked away with this wonderful painting! Copyright 2007
